🎮TREPANG 2 Is One of the BEST Indie FPS I've Played
A spiritual successor to the F.E.A.R. series.
Trepang 2 is a game that has been on my radar for quite a while. It was made by Trepang Studios and published by Team 17, and it is by all means a visceral, fast-paced action FPS that puts action and gunplay at the forefront.
If I had to compare it to other titles, I would say it is a mix of Crysis and F.E.A.R. because it took a couple of iconic abilities from them and blended them in a way that makes you wonder why more games aren't doing it.
With that said, after getting Trepang 2 during Steam's Winter Sale and finishing its campaign and DLC, I can finally share my experience with what I would describe as one of the most brutal single-player shooters I've played.

📖The Story

The story starts with a mysterious stranger freeing you from what looks like a brainwashing simulation and leaving you to fend for yourself. As you escape, you hear the guards calling you Subject 106 and that's how everyone refers to you for the rest of the game.
Later on you find the keys to your handcuffs and a gun. From that point forward, you fight your way out as soldiers swarm you to prevent you from leaving the facility.
Once you reach the exit, you will find a group of friendly NPCs which take you to your new home base.
As you do the missions, you will learn about the different factions:
- Horizon Corporation
- The Jorvik Castle Cult
- The Syndicate
- Task Force 27
There are also collectibles, or "intel" which give you extra details about the things happening on each stage. Like human experiments, scientists meddling with supernatural entities, and the gruesome rituals of the cultists.
🎮Gameplay

Trepang 2 might have some of the best gameplay I've seen in an FPS so far. It isn't just fun; it is flashy, visceral, and it shows you just how much of a nasty piece of work 106 can be.
It does this by giving you 5 main abilities.
- Cloaking – turn invisible to disorient enemies or grab and use them as human shields, snap their necks, throw them off the stage, or turn them into a human bomb.
- Focus – slow down time and take down enemies with precise headshots or pull some nasty tricks with the other mechanics.
- Dual Wielding – use two weapons of the same type at the same time to become twice as lethal.
- Sliding – evade attacks or launch yourself into enemies to send them flying or create an opening to attack shielded soldiers.
- Melee – attack enemies to stun them or dropkick them to send them flying or rip their heads clean off.
Combining these mechanics effectively makes spreading carnage a more cinematic experience, which is only complemented by a decently large arsenal mostly consisting of firearms and throwables, which you can upgrade.
🎨Design

Trepang's 2 visual design and sound are impressive and gory. The developers put a lot of emphasis into making you feel like an unstoppable super soldier by ensuring the game looks and sounds as gruesome as possible during combat.
The weapons are also pretty solid. They look nice, sound strong, and, most importantly, never stop being relevant. Even though some are more effective than others against certain enemies.
Besides the combat, Trepang 2 also has great environmental design for all their stages. They look like places you would actually see in an action movie, so it fits the game perfectly, and the stages involving supernatural entities delivered a creepy and ominous vibe that persisted throughout the mission.
Regarding the music, Trepang's OST was composed by Brandon McKagan and he did a stellar job in making each track blend perfectly with each scene and stage to either build tension or get you pumping when it was time to start blasting.
😐Negatives

When I got Trepang 2, I was expecting an action packed shooter with great gunplay, and it delivered exactly that. However, I do have a couple of complaints.
- The home base is empty and doesn't have any NPCs to interact with. This is supposed to be where you choose your next mission, practice your skills, and refill your ammo. However, there isn't a single soul to interact with or at least to make the place look busy.
- The side missions don't contribute to the main story. While the campaign provides you more information about the factions and your involvement with them, the side missions don't do any of that, and it's just you fighting waves of enemies until you beat the required number.
You will still have a good time with Trepang 2 if you only care about the action, but I do hope they improve the side missions if we ever get a sequel because they were my biggest letdown.

⭐Final Verdict 7/10 Fantastic

Trepang 2 is certainly a good game, and the quality of its gunplay is far above anything I was expecting. It's fast, brutal, and you can get really creative with how you approach your enemies during combat, nailing the feeling of being a super soldier.
I'm convinced it's a perfect game for anyone looking for a power fantasy that's still challenging and lets you put on a violent spectacle during combat.
If you want deep lore with a clear conclusion, though, you might be disappointed. The story is intriguing, but it is pretty vague, and there are times when it uses popular SCPs like the Backrooms, which makes you wonder what direction they had in mind. However, you get back into the action fairly quickly, so that's never a big problem.
For all of these reasons, I give Trepang 2 a solid 7/10 and believe it to be a Fantastic game even though it needs a better story and exposition for us to understand what exactly is going on.
