Resident Evil is one of the most popular titles in the survival horror genre. With its immersive story, iconic characters, great gameplay, and creepy design it became a must-play for all horror enthusiasts.
In this list though, we will see other titles that resemble the style of the Resident Evil games while also having their own twist. You'll find links to the Steam and GOG pages for each game.
The Evil Within
Description:
Probably the one game that's the closest to give you the Resident Evil experience since it was created by the same person behind the RE title. However, it took some many things that made RE great and turned them up a notch to keep you in your toes the entire time.
About the game:
While investigating the scene of a gruesome mass murder, Detective Sebastian Castellanos and his partners encounter a mysterious and powerful force. After seeing the slaughter of fellow officers, Sebastian is ambushed and knocked unconscious. When he awakens, he finds himself in a deranged world where hideous creatures wander among the dead.

FATAL FRAME / PROJECT ZERO: Maiden of Black Water
Description:
The FATAL FRAME series is one of the most unique games in the survival horror genre. Mostly because unlike other titles you don't use guns of any kind. Instead, you use an ancient device called Camera Obscura to fight ghosts and evil spirits and it has three characters you can play as.
About the game:
Mt. Hikami was once revered as a spiritual place. It housed a unique religion based on beliefs and customs of worshipping water as a deity and is said to have been a site of many gruesome incidents and mysterious phenomena. Each of the protagonists explore the now abandoned and ominous Mt. Hikami, to uncover the secrets it hides.

Cold Fear
Description:
An old gem brought back thanks to GOG's preservation program. They didn't just bring it back, they also enhanced it to look far better than before in modern hardware. Not only that, they also enhanced it by adding many new features to improve your experience.
About the game:
Tom Hansen is just another guy in the U.S. Coast Guard when his crew receives a mysterious order to undertake a hazardous rescue mission to find the vessel, an abandoned Russian whaling ship. They board it, but discover that the ship has only been abandoned by human life. Something else is on board, something deadly, and soon Hansen and the only other survivor is the only one left who can stop it.

Tormented Souls 1 & 2
Description:
Tormented Souls follows some of the same mechanics as the old RE games so you can expect shooting, resource management, puzzles, weird camera angles, and other similar traits while also having its own unique challenges and enemies. The second game takes everything that made the first great and improved it.
About the game:
While investigating the disappearance of twin girls at Winterlake, something terrible happens to Caroline Walker. Waking in the dead of night, naked and hooked up to some kind of outdated medical equipment in a bathtub, Caroline must fight for her life as she explores the halls of the abandoned mansion.

SILENT HILL 2
Description:
One of the most famous titles in the survival-horror genre and rightfully so. Originally released on September 24, 2001 for the PlayStation 2, it later got remastered and ported to PC so you can play an enhanced and scarier version of this amazing game.
About the game:
Having received a letter from his deceased wife, James heads to where they shared so many memories, in the hope of seeing her one more time: Silent Hill. There, by the lake, he finds a woman eerily similar to her... "My name… is Maria," the woman smiles. Her face, her voice... She's just like her.
