š®[REVIEW] VOID BREAKER is the Craziest Action Roguelite of 2025
Run, fight, escape
This year has had many amazing games and most of them came from the indie side of the industry, and today I want to talk about one of them. The game in question is Void Breaker.
This is an action roguelite developed by Daniel Stubbington the solo developer of Stubby Games and published by Playstack.
It is currently in Early Access and will be for around 6 to 12 months, but the game already gives you a lot to do and, in my opinion, itās worth the $10.49 it costs on Steam.
At the moment you have access to 3 biomes. They all have different enemies and bosses at the end of each one.
In the map you will get different icons which will show you what to expect from each route and what you can get from them.

As you traverse the stages you will find chests. Some are out in the open while others are a reward for clearing an area of enemies. Inside them, you will find things like:
- Health
- Credits
- Ammo
- Voidium
- Decriptors
- Modules
Iāll explain them in more detail in a moment because there is more depth than just giving you a chest with loot after every fight. But before that I want to talk about the lore.
NOTE: If you care about spoilers skip this section. You have been warned.

šStory

Void Breaker is one of those games where gameplay is the main star and lore takes a back sit. Itās there and it seems interesting. However, it is also ambiguous and doesnāt give you an answer to most of the questions you might have.
All we know is that you are stuck in a simulation running tests for some kind of AI overlord where you fight a bunch of enemies until you either beat all the bosses or die and start over.
At the end of the tutorial you will meet a friendly NPC who tells you the truth of the situation you are in.
He basically tells you:
- The simulation never ends
- You will fight and die over and over again
- The AI will delete you if you stop performing at acceptable levels (wonāt affect gameplay)
- There might be a way to escape
Throughout your runs you will find the VOIDAXIS logo in all the stages as well as in some secret areas that will give you some lore and hints of the origins of this AI.
Thatās pretty much it.

š¾Gameplay

Now with the star of the show.
The game starts with a brief tutorial teaching you most of the mechanics and all thatās left is for you is to pretty much get good with them so you can survive. Starting with the movement.
To move around you have the typical running and jumping but besides that you can also slide in the ground and dash while in the air. There is also a grappling hook you unlock later in the second biome. During combat, you will find jumping pads and rails around the stage to will help you get away from enemies and get the high ground on them.
It might not sound anything crazy, but the enemies will attack you like if you owe them money and have plenty of range, so you need to use everything at your disposal to not get hit.
However, the best way to not get hit, is killing whatever wants to hit you.

If I had to compare Void Breakerās combat to another game it would probably be DOOM Eternal. Which might also explain why I like it so much.
Itās intense, you get a weapon and grenade to fight, and you need to focus on shooting the enemies and dodging their attacks. But unlike DOOM you can also weaponize your environment.
You do this by destroying your surroundings with grenades and explosives to make structures and buildings fall on top of the enemy or grabbing stuff with your tether skill to throw at them.
Both will hurt and stun enemies and if you kill a stunned enemy, it will drop ammo and health.
You also have a melee attack that does a fair amount of damage and can give that final hit you need to take out an enemy.
There are also special abilities that will vary depending on what module you pick up which might change the course of a fight.
Modules are the random power ups you find scattered throughout the stages that will help you stay alive for longer and which you lose if the enemies beat you.
They can do a bunch of things:
- Give you a special ability that goes from shooting electricity to stopping time briefly
- Increase damage from guns, grenades, critical hits, and abilities
- Add elemental damage to your weapons (fire, ice, electricity, corrosive)
- Unlock more module slots or double their efficiency
- Add another ammunition type, optics, ability, and bullet type
- Discounts in the store and other kinds of buffs
You can get modules in various different ways. The most common ones are from the chests you get as a reward for clearing an area or from finding one in the open.

During your runs, you will also find some areas marked with a shopping cart. These are stores where you can buy modules using credits you get from breaking some yellow boxes throughout the stages and taking out certain enemies.
You can also get modules from Obelisks. These are some ominous cones that can either give you different kinds of buffs (including a module) or damage you.
Lastly you have the Corrupters. These are some weird looking cracks which appear before you enter an area and they weaken you or buff the enemy in exchange for more modules once you clear it.
In some cases, you can also find corrupted mods.
These are extremely rare mods which give you incredibly high buffs, but sometimes it comes with a price. For example, you might get one that gives you 400% headshot damage but reduces your body shots by a lot.
You also have a home base you return to after each run. There you will find a section where you can acquire permanent upgrades using Decriptors and Voidium. The former is for unlocking new power ups and the latter is the currency you get from breaking purple boxes during your runs and you use it to purchase and improve said upgrades.
As you clear more areas and defeat the bosses, you will unlock new spaces within the base with new weapons for you to buy with Voidium.
Currently, you have:
- Pistol
- Rifle
- Shotgun
- Marksman
- SMG
You can also do something called Research which unlocks new modules for them to later appear in future runs.

šØDesign

The design of this game is far beyond what I was expecting from a game created by a single dev. It certainly gives you the āsimulation vibesā itās trying to achieve with the environment and enemies.
From the start you can see itās an artificial place that is trying to emulate certain things from the real world. Things like trees, rocks, and water but failing to create something 100% accurate.
Thatās why you will see speakers with birds sounds, metallic structures, as well as areas where gravity is more of a suggestion rather than a law.
The enemies also have a cool design. From humanoid and animal looking creatures to spheres that explode when too close. They all have an alien look that fits perfectly within the setting.

I personally really like the looks and feel of Void Breaker. I found very few visual glitches here and there but since this is a game made from a single dev I didnāt mind too much.
What was problematic, though, is that during my first and second playthrough I encountered a couple of bugs.
- The first one took away my ability to jump for a few minutes when I entered a new area. Fortunately, it came back because that would have ruined my run.
- The second one was more serious, because it took away my ability to shoot after I changed my weapon, and it never came back so I had to reset my run. Thankfully it happened right at the start, so I didnāt lose any progress or sanity.
It's an Early Access game, so things like this are bound to happen, and I haven't encountered anything similar after I reported these bugs.

āFinal Verdict 3/5 - Good

Void Breaker is a solid game with a ton of potential, and I'm excited to see what the developer has planned for it.
The environmental destruction has to be one of the most surprising elements of this game since it isn't just something that happens as a result of your fights, but it is something that plays an important role in your survival since you need it to heal during battle.
The movement is crazy and once you get your hands on it, you will see how nice it feels to move around. If you havenāt guessed by now, I recommend Void Breaker and believe it will be worth the investment.
